MISSION OPPORTUNITIES at General Assembly (July 8-12)

Blessing Bag/Hygiene Kits: Blessing bags for refugees and immigrants:  While Disciples Women are associated with blessing boxes and blessing bags that contribute to funding for the whole mission of the church with a portion going to women’s ministries, this concept of blessing God’s mission through tangible expressions of gratitude is the basis for a mission project sponsored by Disciples Women at GA 2017. Together in acts of gratitude for all our blessings we are inviting attendees of the assembly to contribute to Hygiene kit blessing bags for refugees and those who are displaced.  Disciples Women will be accepting completed bags as well as items to be included in bags. There will be an opportunity to put these blessing bags together at DW booth from items donated. Listed below are the items to be included. DW offers this opportunity to offer a tangible expression of gratitude for all God is doing and has done in your life while providing care for refugees and immigrants.

Personal care items may include but are not limited to:
Hand or body soap/wash/sanitizer
Deodorant
Feminine hygiene products
Mouthwash
Tooth brush/tooth paste
Hand or body lotion
Shampoo and conditioner
Tissues

SEAL ALL ITEMS IN A ONE GALLON ZIPLOCK BAG

Blessing Blankets: Additionally, Disciples Women will be accepting blankets for vulnerable children and families of refugees and immigrants. If you are a quilter you are invited to put together a ‘quick quilt’ and bring to the booth so participants can knot them and offer prayers for those who will be receiving them. New blankets of any kind will be put to good use.

Knitting
Volunteers will be knitting hats with looms Monday through Wednesday for “Little Hats, Big Hearts” for baby caps. When Mission Servants arrive, there will be instructions/directions, 50 looms (provided by West Street Christian in Tipton, IN), and red yarn. You are welcome to bring along some red yarn as well. The caps will be distributed by the American Heart Association to hospitals across central Indiana.

If you aren’t planning to attend General Assembly, you can still participate by donating items for the blessing bags/hygiene kits, making/purchasing and donating blankets or knitting hats to send with our General Assembly representatives.

Disciples Women’s Ministries is a conduit for diverse connections
empowering each woman to find her voice and live out her call.  (Micah 6:8)

As part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Disciples Women welcomes all to the table as Christ has welcomed us. The ministries of Disciples Women are part of the movement for wholeness in a fragmented world by providing opportunities for spiritual growth, enrichment, education, and creative ministries to enable women to develop a sense of personal responsibility for the whole mission of the church.

We seek to be a network of women committed to the justice-seeking, compassion-focused mission of Jesus Christ with no membership requirements or conditions.

Find out more about Disciples Women here.

Taking part in opportunities such as this helps us understand that we are all a part of something greater than ourselves and larger than our own churches in our own communities. The work we accomplish together can make a huge difference in providing the love, hope and healing offered to us through Jesus Christ.

Blessings,
Tracy
