Love…still work to do

hearts
Sarah is my daughter.  She is 33, but for a while, long ago, she was seven.

She had shimmering, long blond hair and was very smart.  She loved her little brother and us too.

When bedtime came, on occasion, we would just sit and talk about nothing in particular.

All that “nothing” was really something and I wish we had recordings of those moments.

There is one thing we talked about that we both remember vividly which has provided unending hours of laughter and joy.

I invented a game. The point of the game was to think of totally useless things.

A screen door in submarine comes to mind. The one we laughed most over was “diamond studded toilet paper.”

One night Sarah offered what she believed to be a totally useless thing. Bless her sweet heart, she said, “Hate.”

I thought for a minute before answering. I said, “I don’t think hate is totally useless.”

She waited for me to go on. “When we see hate, what do we do Sarah?” She had a light bulb moment. “We try to replace it with love. “That’s right,” I said. “So, is it a totally useless thing?”  “No daddy it isn’t,” she said.

I see hate in so many places.

The church had better keep working hard to overcome it.

Finally, about ten years ago, I received what may be my all time favorite present from my daughter.

It was a roll of toilet paper with plastic rhinestones glued all over it. (Diamond studded toilet paper!)

Moving to the deeper places,
