But basketball? Seriously?

We are in the middle of March Madness.

This is the beginning of the NCAA tournament, the National Invitational Tournament, the SEC tournament, the Kentucky Boys and Girls regional and State Tournaments and the Special Olympics State Basketball tournament.

You ask, what does this have to do with the Christian faith?

The point is that, for the Christian, everything is touched by faith.

But basketball? Seriously?

Is it possible for the Christian to take faith into the field of competitive sports which allows for winners and losers?

First, there are the gifts that we are given to develop and use. Athletes use gifts that are given. The spectator celebrates these gifts, win or lose.

Secondly, we pray, but not for victory. We pray to do our best. We pray for our teammates and coaches. We pray for opponents. We pray to honor God with the use of our gifts.

Thirdly, we remain humble, in victory, resolute in defeat. We use our intellect to determine a path to improvement.

Fourthly, we engage in good sportsmanship. I don’t think Christians denigrate referees, gloat in victory, promise to humiliate opponents in competition or become angry with players or coaches when things do not go well.

Fifthly, while our teams are in competition, I would think a Christian would realize that the opposing team is not the enemy. Remember when we would choose up sides and play, then choose a different team for the next game? My team could have been their team. Their team could have been my team. We are separated in competition by the thinness of a gossamer wing. I am you, you are me. “Treat others like you want to be treated.” (See yourself in others.)

Finally, remember, sporting events are entertainment. A Christian referee said the other day, “You have to remember this is entertainment, not life and death. We let them play and guide them when things get a little out of hand.”
