#enoughalready!
For those of you who are Twitter users…the above title is called a 'hashtag' and it signifies a thread of conversation…in this case conversations where people are fed up with something. In most cases it is the winter weather we are having lately, but is not limited to that. There are twitter feeds where people are fed up with the antics of Justin Bieber, the current president, school closings, racism (along with many other ‘isms), and you name it. People are fed up so they hit the Twittersphere with their opinions.
But instead of unplugging or tuning out what they are fed up over, they go to their favorite media and fill the airwaves and internet blogs with all they have to say regarding whatever ‘fed up’ craze is currently trending. Truth is, their additions to the conversation are only adding to that frenzy. To truly be fed up…one needs to decide to be finished…and then not return.
Today we look at the world and realize nothing looks or operates as it once did. People do not interact the way the once interacted. They seem to fall into two categories: 1) you can’t tolerate technology and so you avoid it as much as humanly possible, or 2) you eat, sleep and breathe it…you announce to the entire reading world your every move and post a ‘selfie’ (a self-taken, self-published photo) to show folks how you looked when you did whatever it was you did.
Sometimes, the people in category 1 are fed up with the people in category 2 or vice versa; the people in category 2 are fed up with those in category 1. Can’t we all just get along? Once again, these are issues of polarities when the world is much more nuanced than just one opinion or another. There is still a little-known, little-used option when looking at polarities called dialogue…where people can gather and learn from one another rather than assigning teams and looking for who is with us, and who is against us.
Psalm 133 speaks of the blessedness of unity, “How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!” The psalmist added that exclamation point, not me. Parents are known to wonder what is up if their kids suddenly start getting along. Is this because it is in our nature to disagree? If so, then maybe that is something worth being fed up about. #enoughalready on dissention! Let’s start a new twitter trend…#unity! “For there,” writes the psalmist, “the Lord ordained his blessing, life forevermore.”
Blessings,
Tracy
