Over the weekend folks from across the region gathered at Crestwood Christian Church in Lexington, KY for the Christian Church in Kentucky’s Biennial Assembly. We gathered with old friends, met new friends, worshiped and prayed together, learned together and conducted the business of the regional church together.

We heard reports from the regional board, regional ministers and ministry groups, from constituency groups, task forces and institutions of higher learning. Every report exuded the excitement of new ministries and new experiences as the result of seeking ways to live into our call to share the good news of Jesus Christ in all that we do in our region and our world. Ministry has become a more creative endeavor than in years past, but it is clear that God is still active and involved in how the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) engages the world in ministry.

The most exciting news of assembly is the resolution to purchase property for the new camp and conference center in Edmonson County. This new camp will integrate Camp Wakon Da-Ho and Camp Kum-Ba-Ya into one location and will also serve as a year-round facility accessible to people of every age and stage of life no matter their abilities or limitations. Camp Kum-Ba-Ya will remain property of the region and will still be a place for specialty camps and retreats so long as the West Area desires to hold this property. The new property is 106 acres of land within a 3 hour driving radius of every Disciples of Christ church in the state, with the exceptions of Paducah, Ashland and Pikeville. It has accessibility from two well maintained roads and has access to the infrastructure necessary to support the water and waste water generated by large groups. This new venture in a united camp ministry is one way the region continues their work in connecting congregations and equipping leaders for tomorrow!
