Hospitality

Fishing at Camp Wakon Da Ho! This is my favorite Interest Group and obviously a favorite for the kids as well. This morning when we signed up for Interest Groups the first breakfast table dismissed for sign-ups filled in the fishing group page immediately. We walked down to the barn to collect our poles and head over to the pond for a morning fishing excursion. When we arrived at the barn all the faces fell–we encountered a fishing-pole- knotted nightmare. There would not likely be any fishing today. We had to untangle lines and tie on new hooks for that to happen.

I gave the kids the option of going to another Interest Group. Their response overwhelmed me…"Can we stay and help untangle the lines?" YES YOU CAN! So, we're working hard untangling lines and we get a pole or two free. I begin tying hooks on the end and attaching bobbers to the line. Conner Free from FCC Cynthiana speaks up…"No one fishes until we all have a pole." They all agreed enthusiastically and worked hard together getting the poles ready. When everyone had a pole they walked up the small hill and had a great day of fishing.

Conner blessed us all once more when he caught 5 fish and set his pole down to help those kids who had not caught anything to have a successful day at the ponds.

Our text for the day today came from 1 Kings 17:7-16. The story of Elijah and the widow of Zarapheth. Elijah asks the widow for food and drink and she gives to him from the last of her stores. Elijah is blessed by her hospitality and she is blessed by the miracle of replenished flour and oil throughout the drought. Conner had not heard this story yet. He showed hospitality to me and to his camping friends because this is who he is at heart and how he lives.

We try each day to teach these kids the text for the day in ways they can embody and live. Today, Conner taught us.

Feeling blessed,
Tracy
