Please Read Matthew 5:13-20
When one rises from the waters of baptism
in our church, they hear the people say:
"You are the salt of the earth;
you are the light of the world.
Let your light shine before others,
so that they may see your good works
and give glory to your Father in heaven."
People who are called "salty" today
are described as spunky, real and "colorful."
Jesus was saying we bear the responsibility
of being disciples who bring the flavor
of the kingdom of God into our relationships.
"Taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are those who take refuge in him."
He then says, "You are the light of the world."
Jesus expects us to bear light into a world
where the darkness contains fear, hatred,
violence and mean-spirited words.
John said in his gospel of Jesus,
"The light shines in the darkness
and the darkness has not overcome it."
Using salt and light is an interesting way
for Jesus to say,
"Add faith to life to make it more fulfilling.
Let the beauty of your soul show the
way for everyone around you."
I wish I had been there to hear
the way he said this.
Moving to the deeper place,
