Martin Luther King, Jr. Lessons and Celebrations

Chi Rho and CYF (middle and high school aged) youth will be traveling to Transylvania University Campus Center for a trip through Archie Bunker’s Neighborhood, a special youth event on Sunday, January 15 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.  We will eat lunch together following worship on the 15th and then travel to Lexington to gather at 2:00pm with youth from across the region.  Following a brief orientation our youth will experience what life is like for folks in many different circumstances.  They may discover the difficulties of using public transportation as a person who is not able bodied.  They could find out first-hand how racism is inherent in our society.  Perhaps they will face the challenges that come from being impoverished, unable to speak English, or not knowing how to read or write.

The event should wind up around 5:45pm with a time to debrief and enjoy pizza.  Then we will walk (weather permitting) to Central Christian Church for the annual “Martin Luther King, Jr.
Community Worship Service”and celebration. The worship service begins at 6 p.m. and the Rev. Dr. Forrest E. Harris, Sr. will bring the message for the day. Dr. Harris was appointed President of American Baptist College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1999. He is also the Director of the Kelly Miller Smith Institute on Black Church Studies and Assistant Dean for Black Church Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Dr. Harris holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from Knoxville College, a Bachelor of Theology (Th.B.) degree from American Baptist College, Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degrees from Vanderbilt University Divinity School.  Parents, family members or church members who would like to join us for worship are welcomed to come. Central Christian Church’s address is 205 East Short St., Lexington.

This event is sponsored by US, First Christian Church, Paris KY, and Transylvania University.  If your child (or you) plans to attend please contact us at the church office (987-3940) so we can make sure to have enough room for everyone. We will be inviting the youth from 7th Street Christian Church, North Middletown Christian Church, Clintonville Christian Church and Prodigals House to join us for this event.

The Transylvania Campus Center is located at the corner of Broadway and Fourth Street.  Please enter from the drive off Fourth Street.  If you are planning to stay for the service at Central, we suggest you park at Central Christian Church’s lot off Martin Luther King Blvd., and plan to walk with the youth to Central after our game time. It is a five block walk from the Campus Center. Please dress accordingly.

Blessings,
Tracy
