Seats & Feets!
Sunday, August 21st, our members gathered in fellowship hall for a potluck dinner and to hear stories of the youth mission trip to Jamaica. It was obvious to everyone who gathered and heard about the trip that lives were transformed. One of many positive outcomes from this outreach ministry has been the commitment to seek ways to serve those in need here, in our surrounding area.
In terms of poverty, often a person will try to present their best selves but not have the resources for every layer of clothing. The result may be presentable on the outside, but underwear and socks are often tattered and worn out. Because these items are not seen by the public, a person living in poverty will rarely invest their limited resources to buy new socks or underwear.
In Jamaica, we donated most of our clothing to the organization with whom we worked. They laundered what we wore throughout the week and distributed the items to those in need. Our group was amazed to hear they would also take our discarded underclothes. We cannot imagine wearing someone else’s intimate apparel…even if it were washed! But, when you have nothing, I guess you do what you have to.
Jackson Livingood, one of our high school aged youth, has proposed that we start a collection of new socks and underwear, for both men and women, to be distributed to the Hope Centers in Lexington. (Many people are not aware that there are centers for both genders, but there are, and we’d like to support each of them in our efforts.) Boxes will be placed at the entrances to both sanctuaries and in the fellowship hall for your donations. Items in every size are welcomed! Once we’ve collected a good amount of items, we will arrange to not only take them to the centers, but to also serve a meal or dessert and spend some time interacting with the recipients of our giving. Our visit will be open to members of all ages, so if you would like to join us, please let us know; otherwise, your donations are greatly appreciated!
The theme for this campaign will be “Seats & Feets!” And, be sure to let Jackson know how proud we are of his compassion and willingness to serve others!
Blessings,
Tracy
