Sent: Delivering the Gift of Hope at Christmas
It is time, once again, to gather our Sunday School classes together for some Intergenerational time of learning through the Advent season. This year we will be studying Sent: Delivering the Gift of Hope at Christmas by Jorge Acevedo. In this study we will have the opportunity to help one another as we journey through Advent. The early church fathers and mothers had the great wisdom to set aside the four weeks leading up to Christmas as a time to prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ. The word advent means “arrival” or “coming.” The birth of Jesus was a historical event that took place in a particular time and place, and yet every Christmas has the potential for Jesus to be born anew, in our lives and in our world.
We will explore what it means for Christ to be sent by God into our lives and reflect on how, in turn, we might be sent into the world as the hands and feet of Christ, not just in this season, but all year long.
Throughout the weeks of Advent, we will hear stories of events that changed everything. We will utilize church technology to view videos of not only the author of this study, but colleagues in his ministry—Jacob Armstrong, Lanecia Rouse, Justin LaRosa, and Rachel Billups. Encountering the stories and perspectives of other Christians will, hopefully, provide a depth and diversity beyond the viewpoint of one person. This will also allow each of us to explore our own life stories and reflect on the unique lens each of us brings to the Christmas journey.
Scripture tells us that where two or three are gathered together, we can be assured of the presence of the Holy Spirit, working in and through us as we study, learn and pray. This study will offer five sessions…which will begin on Sunday, November 29th at 9:30 a.m. and conclude on December 27th. Journaling is also suggested as a way to enhance your study experience as we go through the weeks of Advent seeking ways to welcome the Christ child into our lives.
Several books are available, including Large Print editions, if you would like to read along as we study together at a cost of $10 each. You may also borrow a book and return it to the church when we conclude our study. Books can be purchased electronically for e-readers if you prefer that particular format. Donuts, coffee and juice will also be available prior to the study hour. Join us for breakfast and fellowship before we study and learn together!
I look forward to celebrating all the joys of the holiday season with each of you!
Blessings,
Tracy
