An Angry Jesus…
Please read John 2:13-22
Jesus cleanses the temple.
That is the nice way of saying it.
Jesus came angry to the temple, which had become a bevy of commercial activity.
To be fair, they were selling animals for sacrifice in the temple, which was an accepted practice.
But what made Jesus so angry and why did he choose the time right before Passover to exhibit a physically disturbing, violent act?
How had the practice he came to loathe, become an accepted and necessary practice in the temple?
Why, so early in John, are we directed away from the comforting, healing loving Jesus who passively resists violence toward him?
Why didn’t he ask them nicely to leave?
What are the implications for him and for worship in the temple?
Why does Jesus answer a question in a way they cannot understand?
After a time of intense study, I will answer many of these questions and tell you what I think this means for the church today, when we gather for worship at Seventh Street Christian Church, Sunday at 11 a.m. for worship.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Moving to the deeper places,
Jeff
