Challenges
What do we do when the news seems overwhelming and maybe is?
What do we do when we walk to the brink and wonder if we can back away, but feel like we are ready to fall off the edge?
These can be very difficult times emotionally, physically and spiritually. They challenge our mental stability and our imaginations.
A person of faith has several options, none of which quickly "solves" anything, but which help lift us up and set us back on our feet.
First, I propose, is to "be still." Just be quiet, in a quiet place. Take deep breaths. Be by yourself. Clear your mind of the raging and angry or fearful thoughts. Clear your mind of all thoughts just for a short while. They will probably return soon. The Psalmist said, "Be still and know that I am God."
Secondly, relax. With God's help, physically relax the muscles over which you have control. You will find in successive tries that there always seems to be some tension left which can be released.
Thirdly, listen to God. Hear what Jesus said in Matthew 11:30: "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."– from The Message
Fourth, have or find someone to walk with on this journey who has the capacity to listen and allow you to be where you are for the time being. A hand up comes later.
Fifth, please read Colossians 3:12. Paraphrase it this way: I am God's chosen one, holy and beloved. Repeat this softly out loud. Whisper it. Repeat it a dozen or more times. Repeat this when you lie down and when you rise and whenever else you are able.
Then, live into that vision, however you understand what that means.
And may God bless you on this difficult journey.
Moving to the deeper places,
Jeff
