“God so loved the world…”

God so loved the world

The Passover meal, the instituted last supper, the crucifixion and finally, the resurrection, are coming.

This Holy Week is a summary of the last week of Jesus life.

He arrives on a donkey in a parade. He breaks bread with his Jewish brothers.  He walks a non-violent path to his untimely death on a an instrument of execution.

All of this because “God so loved the world…”

Why would this happen to one who comes in love for all humankind?  Here is what I think.

Love is a force to be reckoned with.

Truly, love is a strength that shames abusive power. Hold both up to “the Light” and dominance, authoritarianism and greed, look pretty shabby.

Love proclaims the truth.

We are afraid of the truth, especially sinners.

Jesus bears the love of God.

This love makes the wealth and power of Rome, look, well, sad and impotent.

This love makes the Pharisees appear unfaithful.

Make a powerful person look  bad and you may very well pay a steep price.

While calling them to a new faithfulness, they resented, detested and challenged the teaching of a man who would die for them.

Exactly how did all this happen?

I don’t know.

But God knows.

And that’s all that matters.

Moving to the deeper places,
