It's Camp Promotion Time Again!

Each year the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Kentucky welcomes hundreds of children and youth from across the state to two church camp grounds: one in Casey County, Kentucky and the other on Kentucky Lake in Western, Kentucky. Both camps offer unique outdoor ministry opportunities with enthusiastic adults who grew up in the camp and conference systems and want to share the love of God with others in the setting of God's creation.

It is often quite difficult to help your child make that decision to go away for a week of camp and leave behind family and friends to face the unknown in the middle of nowhere. Parents who've never experienced the wonder that is church camp have difficulties imparting to children the benefits of participating in this amazing ministry program. They are able to assure their children they will enjoy the experience, but may not be able to articulate just what their child can expect at a week of camp.

Now, we're all in luck. Your child can receive a small taste of what to expect at a week of church camp, but only offer up one weekend for the experiment. March 16, 17 and 18 will be Camp Wakon Da' Ho's annual Lumber Jack/Lumber Jane weekend. Youth gather for this spring clean weekend to spend time getting camp ready for the summer camp season. We spend our time playing games, telling stories, eating delicious meals and getting a little work done in the process of uniting with old friends and meeting new ones. Its the perfect mini-experience to learn what camp is all about. The cost for this event is only $20 per person, which includes all meals and lodging for the weekend. We leave late afternoon on Friday and return shortly after church on Sunday. Won't you join us for this fabulous event? Register now by calling the church office or emailing Tracy.

If you're not able to join us for our Lumber Jack/Lumber Jane weekend, but want to help out with the summer camp program the Regional Office has put together a wish list of items needed to help support the summer camp program. You can find this list online here.

Camp Wakon Da Ho is also operating with a new camp caretaker. This year we welcome Matt Nalley to the Outdoor Ministries staff. Matt grew up at Jeffersontown Christian Church, attending camp Wakon Da Ho as a child and has counseled camps every summer of his adult life. Matt is excited to get busy getting our campsite up and running for the camp season! Unfortunately he has also encountered a great deal of serious work that needs done. Our camp is aging and in the last few years has fallen into disrepair. Matt has helped the region to also put together a maintenance wish list which can be accessed here

Churches and individuals looking for local mission opportunities are encouraged to take our summer camp under your care. Last year 17 children and youth from First Christian Church spent a week (or two) of their summer at Camp Wakon Da Ho. For many, this was their first visit. The most prevalent question of the week for our kids was, "Which cabin has our church adopted?" (adopted cabins sport a sign) The answer to this question was , "none." They really want our congregation to have a presence at Wakon Da Ho. This is a place they've all come to love dearly and to associate as integral to their faith formation. Please look over the camp wish lists and prayerfully consider ways that you can help Camp Wakon Da Ho.

We are now taking registrations for summer camps. If your child, grandchild, relative or friend is a little fearful of what to expect at summer camp, let us know. I have 17 youth who are ready to share their excitement for another great week at church camp. View a Youtube promotional video here

Its going to be a great year!
