Miracles!
Miracles always point to something spiritual.
Say you call the feeding of the 5,000 a miracle.
Then you must ask, “What was Jesus up to?”
Those people would just have to be fed again for supper.
What he was seeking was faith.
Jesus wanted followers
who would be enthralled
by the wonder and mystery of God.
Food was a vehicle.
A child provided the inspiration and seeds.
There was plenty for everyone.
A miracle.
Embedded in this “miracle” however,
was compassion for the poor and
hungry, a vision for what can be done
among the people of God when
people see what is possible.
Embedded in this miracle is faith to move
mountains, love of the least of these.
calming of fears, overcoming the
objection that there wasn’t enough
money.
Embedded in this miracle was proof
that God cared, good stewardship,
the value of retreat when stress intrudes,
and the wisdom of eating together.
Ah, yes, too, was the miracle of the seed
and the soil, the fish created by God,
the coming together of the people
to worship, and the need not to explain
everything.
What an incredible story!
