Outreach Opportunity
We have a fabulous opportunity before us to reach out and make a difference in the lives of our campers at Camp Wakon’Da-Ho in the very near future. Please join us for a mini-mission experience Memorial Weekend.
As many of you may already be aware, Camp Wakon’Da-Ho is in much need of repair. But, like the rest of us facing a difficult economy there just isn't enough money in the budget to do the things that need to be done. In an effort to meet the needs of Outdoor Ministries and to exercise good stewardship of the funds available to us we are planning a mini-mission trip to do some much needed repairs to Camp Wakon’Da-Ho on Memorial Weekend.
Over the winter months the plumbing in the girls' bathhouse froze and burst. When we attended the Lumber Jack/Jane weekend, the girls had to share the Directors' showers and bathrooms for the weekend. No big deal under small circumstances, but when you get anywhere from 90 to 100 youth and adults trying to share a bathroom equipped with only 2 bathroom stalls and 2 showers for an entire week–well you can imagine the logistical nightmare! In addition to the plumbing woes, last summer one of the concrete walls which separate the shower stalls from the bathroom stalls in this same bathhouse began to lean precariously and had to be shored up temporarily.
My husband, Bob Parker, is a licensed plumber so the Regional Offices contacted him with the proposal to redo the plumbing in the bathhouse donating his skills and the region purchasing the supplies. Bob, of course, agreed wholeheartedly as Wakon’Da-Ho has been a place of spiritual nourishment for our family for decades.
We have before us an opportunity to put our hands to work for a very necessary and worthy cause. To replace the plumbing, we need to tear down the precarious concrete walls. The new walls will be made of wood. We are in need of a few able bodied persons willing to come to Wakon’Da-Ho for the weekend to help tear down the old concrete walls, help install new plumbing and rebuild the new, sturdy (AND SAFE!) walls. Minimal skills and a willing heart are all that are necessary.
Burgin Christian Church is helping to fund this venture and Middletown Christian Church and First Christian in Lawrenceburg are both working to pull together a few volunteers. The number of committed persons will determine how much work we can get done, so if you have a desire to reach out and put your gifts to work for the Outdoor Ministries program within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), please see me!
Blessings,
Tracy
