Sureness …
Christians, for heaven’s sake, let’s not be too sure of ourselves.
Long ago, I became convinced that, perhaps the greatest sin, was to be arrogant, and completely convinced I am right, period, about the things that concern God. We must have convictions, yes.
I believe love is more powerful than death. I believe within Jesus is the power to save us all.
But I cannot nail down to the nth detail, how love works in us.
I cannot tell you with air tight certainty, how God saves and who is or isn’t “saved.” That is God’s business.
I think the world is turned off by a church which acts with “too much certainty,” or has put God in a box or considers itself an exclusive club of the “saved.”
Sometimes we put God on a leash and trot him out when we want to prove a point.
Arrogance stops us in our tracks from seeking new ways God may be unfolding the kingdom for us.
God is mysterious, mystical, spiritual. If we know anything, we know that our understanding of God changes over time. Remember, slavery was justified by scripture. Then, slavery was overturned by the use of scripture.
You can be sure of God’s love in Jesus Christ, without being arrogant.
Let the Spirit of God breathe into your soul. Allow scripture to be the leaven in your life. Remain open to new ways God may speak to you in your moment of need. God is always doing a new thing, calling an unexpected person, redeeming a sinner, healing the enemy’s servant, giving proof to a doubting Thomas.
If you are too sure of yourself, you might just pick up a rattlesnake and believe God is going to protect you, when you know it is poisonous.
Moving to the deeper places,
