A Thrill of Hope: the Christmas Story in Word and Art

a-thrill-of-hope-3Christmas already?!? Its still October!! I know, but it is time to think ahead and that is exactly what we’ve been doing. We are preparing ourselves for Advent and the Christmas season, planning worship and faith formation. This year we will, once again, combine our Sunday School classes in Fellowship Hall and study together what it means to encounter God incarnate in the baby Jesus.

This year we will use “A Thrill of Hope: the Christmas Story in Word and Art,” produced by Morehouse Education Resources of Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. We’ll study the familiar stories of Christmas in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke while contemplating the stunning artwork of John August Swanson along with commentary by some of America’s premier Biblical scholars. We’ll hear from names such as: Dr. Thomas G. Long, Dr. Michael Joseph Brown, Dr. Carol A. Newsom and more.

The study is divided into six one hour sessions with a 7-minute video for each chapter. Each video featuring a passage of a Scripture, commentary by the scholars, and a Swanson work of art based on that passage.
Included are:
• A Visit (Luke 1:26-38)
• The Nativity (Luke 2:1-7)
• The Shepherds (Luke 2:8-20)
• Epiphany (Matthew 2:1-12)
• Presentation in the Temple (Luke 2:21-40)
• Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15)

Join us, beginning Sunday, November 27th at 9:30 a.m. for this six week study. Each week coffee, donuts and juice will be available for breakfast. Come early to visit with friends and stay as we learn and seek understanding together.

Blessings,
Tracy
