‘Who Are the Disciples of Christ)”

Disciples 101 — The Basics of the Christian Faith through the faith of the Disciples of Christ, meeting Thursday, November 8 from 7-8 p.m.

The election approaches. Within our congregation are people who will support different candidates for every office on the ballot. Some feel passionately about their choice. Some do not, but will vote anyway. There are people here who couldn't disagree more about who the best candidate for office might be.

These people live together in the love of Jesus Christ. They care about each other and do not demean the choices others will make different from their own. Once upon a time, the chair of the Democratic party and the chair of the Republican party in Bourbon County worshipped here together. They were great friends, had deep respect for each other and worked together within the church on different projects.

This is one way to describe how we come together around issues of the faith. We allow others space for their political preferences and decisions and we still get along.

Issues of the faith are similar. There may be differences of opinion regarding certain aspects of our understanding of scripture, prayer and worship. We gather and talk about our individual approaches to faith issues. We do this best when we have integrity on these issues, wherever we stand.

We pray about things. Some are passionate and practiced with an active prayer life. For some it is hit and miss. We love them all. Having faith is not easy. There are many difficult questions which do not have simple answers. The pastors here do not have a little book in which the answers are printed neatly. They don't give those out in seminary. But the Bible is our source and we seek what is to be found there.

By and large, we trust each other and come when we are needed. The journey is not always clear and smooth. We try to point each other to the light of Christ and walk together in our process of discovery.

I love this church and hope you will too.

Moving to the deeper places,
