The Church

Life is fragile.

Life is short.

The few days we have

are given to be used

taking care of each other.

 

Life is fragile.

There is disease and pain.

There is suddenness in death.

You will not live many days

between hearing about

another’s suffering.

 

The early church

began to organize

and become an institution

around the specific task

of taking care of the vulnerable.

 

Deacons were called

to make sure widows

received a fair distribution of food.

This came from a complaint

that they were not

being treated fairly.

 

The church became organized

when they decided

to take care of people.

 

It was that simple.

 

And that complicated.
